Origin: Of multiple origins. Partly a borrowing from Latin. Partly formed within English, by derivation. Etymons: Latin suppressor ; suppress v., -or suffix.
Etymology: Partly (i) < classical Latin suppressor harbourer of slaves (2nd cent. a.d.), in post-classical Latin also person who suppresses (8th cent., 12th cent., 15th cent. in British sources; 14th cent. in a continental source) < suppress- , past participial stem of supprimere suppress v. + -or -or suffix; and partly (ii) < suppress v. + -or suffix. Compare earlier suppresser n.
