Etymology: < Sunda (Indonesian Sunda, Malay Sunda, Sundanese Sunda), the name of a region in western Java, also (originally in European use) the name of a group of islands in the Malay Archipelago including Borneo, Java, Sumatra, Sulawesi, Bali, and Timor.The place name is attested in English contexts from the 16th cent., originally as the name of a kingdom in western Java, and from the late 17th cent. (by extension) also of a group of surrounding islands.
