Origin: From a proper name. Etymon: proper name Sunda.
Etymology: < Sunda (Indonesian Sunda, Malay Sunda, Sundanese Sunda), the name of a region in western Java, also (originally in European use) the name of a group of islands in the Malay Archipelago including Borneo, Java, Sumatra, Sulawesi, Bali, and Timor.The place name is attested in English contexts from the 16th cent., originally as the name of a kingdom in western Java, and from the late 17th cent. (by extension) also of a group of surrounding islands. Compare Dutch Soenda , name of the kingdom (16th cent. as Sunda ), name of the Sunda Strait between Java and Sumatra (17th cent. or earlier), and name of the group of islands (18th cent. or earlier). Scientific use. In scientific use (see sense A. 1) often with reference to the biogeographical region north-west of the Wallace line (see Wallace line n. at Wallace n. b), comprising the western part of the Sunda archipelago as well as the Philippines and the Malay Peninsula.
