Origin: Formed within English, by compounding. Etymons: sun n.1, burst n.
Etymology: < sun n.1 + burst n.In sense 2 perhaps after Irish gal gréine, the name of the flag used by various Irish nationalist and republican movements in the 19th cent. ( < gal ardour, heat + gréine, genitive singular of grian sun; also sometimes called scal ghréine, lit. ‘flash or burst of the sun’), although it is difficult to find early attestations for this name, and the current Irish phrase may alternatively be after English.
