Etymology: < super- prefix + infection n. Compare later superinfect v. Compare earlier reinfection n.
1. Medicine. Infection with a different kind or strain of organism occurring in a person or animal already suffering from an infection; (in later use) spec. infection with a newly acquired drug-resistant bacterium occurring in an individual being treated with broad-spectrum antibiotics; an instance of this. In early use also: reinfection with the same organism (now rare).
