Etymology: < super- prefix + impregnation n. In sense 1 after superimpregnate v. In sense 2 after post-classical Latin superimpraegnation-, superimpraegnatio (1552 or earlier), itself probably after ancient Greek ἐπικύημα (Hippocrates). Compare Middle French superimpregnacion superfecundation (a1365 in an apparently isolated attestation).
Now rare.
