单词 superhumeral
释义

superhumeraln.

Brit. /ˌsuːpəˈhjuːm(ə)rəl/, /ˌsjuːpəˈhjuːm(ə)rəl/, /ˌsuːpəˈhjuːm(ə)rl̩/, /ˌsjuːpəˈhjuːm(ə)rl̩/, U.S. /ˌsupərˈ(h)jumərəl/
Forms: Old English superumerale, Old English 1600s–1800s superhumerale, 1500s–1600s 1800s– superhumeral, 1600s superhumerall.
Origin: A borrowing from Latin. Etymon: Latin superhumerale.
Etymology: < post-classical Latin superhumerale ephod (Vetus Latina, Vulgate), pall, amice (4th cent.), use as noun (short for vestimentum superhumerale garment worn over the shoulders) of neuter singular of superhumeralis < super- super- prefix + humeralis humeral adj. Compare Anglo-Norman and Middle French superhumeral (14th cent. or earlier). In Old English in forms superhumerale , superumerale , apparently as an indeclinable noun. Compare also Old English subumbrale (see subucula n. and discussion at that entry). Apparently reborrowed in the late 16th cent.
Now chiefly historical.
A religious vestment worn over the shoulders, such as an amice, ephod, or pallium. Also figurative: a burden carried on the shoulders.
