Compare Anglo-Norman and Middle French superhumeral (14th cent. or earlier). In Old English in forms superhumerale , superumerale , apparently as an indeclinable noun. Compare also Old English subumbrale (see subucula n. and discussion at that entry). Apparently reborrowed in the late 16th cent.
