Origin: A borrowing from Latin. Etymon: Latin superfētāre.
Etymology: < classical Latin superfētāre to conceive again while still pregnant < super- super- prefix + fētāre (see fetation n.), after ancient Greek ἐπικυεῖν , ἐπικυίσκεσθαι . Compare Middle French superfœter (1574 and 1582 in two apparently isolated attestations). Compare earlier superfetant adj., superfetation n.
Obsolete.
1. intransitive. To conceive again while still pregnant; = superfetate v.figurative in quot. 1642.
