Origin: A borrowing from Japanese. Etymon: Japanese sumōtori.
Etymology: < Japanese sumōtori (1595; 1603 as sumǒtori in Vocabulario da Lingoa de Iapam, glossed as ‘wrestler’), remodelling (after sumō sumo n.) of †sumafutori wrestler, wrestling (?c1500), nominalized form of the verb phrase †sumafu wo toru to wrestle (14th cent.) < †sumafu wrestling (earliest as †sumapu : see sumo n.) + wo , object marker + toru to engage in, lit. ‘to take, take on’ (see tori n.). Compare earlier sumo n. 1.An older Japanese expression was †sumapi-bito, lit. ‘wrestling person’ (8th cent.).
