Origin: A borrowing from Latin. Etymon: Latin supraspinatus.
Etymology: < post-classical Latin supraspinatus (1605 or earlier) < classical Latin suprā- supra- prefix + spīna spine n.1 + -ātus -ate suffix2. Compare post-classical Latin spinatus (1555 or earlier as a muscle name).
Anatomy and Zoology.
Also supraspinatus muscle. A muscle arising from the supraspinous fossa of the scapula and inserted into the greater tuberosity of the humerus, assisting in abduction of the arm.
