Origin: A borrowing from Latin. Etymon: Latin supracoracoideus.
Etymology: < scientific Latin supracoracoideus (1862 or earlier; 1873 or earlier in musculus supracoracoideus ) < classical Latin suprā- supra- prefix + post-classical Latin coracoideus (16th cent.) < coracoides (see coracoid adj.) + -eus (see -eous suffix).
Zoology and Palaeontology.
A muscle originating from the sternum (in birds) or the coracoid bone or plate (in reptiles and amphibians) and inserting on the humerus, serving (in birds) to elevate the wing in flight and (in reptiles and amphibians) to support the body on the forelimb. More fully supracoracoideus muscle.
