Etymology: < super- prefix + dominant n. (although this is apparently first attested slightly later in the musical sense). Compare earlier subdominant n.1, subdominant adj.1

The sixth note of an ascending diatonic scale, lying above the dominant. Now more usually called submediant (see submediant n.).Cf. subdominant n.1, dominant n. 1.
