Origin: Formed within English, by derivation; perhaps modelled on a German lexical item. Etymons: sub- prefix, English tropics , tropic n.
Etymology: < sub- prefix + tropics, plural noun (see tropic n. 2b), perhaps after German Subtropen, plural noun (1850 or earlier). Compare earlier subtropic adj., subtropical adj.
With plural agreement. The regions adjacent to or bordering on the tropics; spec. the latitudinal zones between the Tropic of Cancer and 40°N, and the Tropic of Capricorn and 40°S.
