Origin: Formed within English, by derivation. Etymons: sub- prefix, tone n.
Etymology: < sub- prefix + tone n. With sense 2 compare earlier undertone n. In sense 3 after German Unterton (1856 or earlier in this sense; late 18th cent. or earlier in sense 2).
1. Music. An interval approximately equal to a semitone. Obsolete. rare.Used by T. P. Thompson (see quot. 1829) to refer to an interval on the ‘Approximative Scale’, a musical scale apparently of his own invention.
