Etymology: Apparently < classical Latin suī of oneself (see suist n.) + -ism suffix, with insertion of -c- to avoid hiatus, probably after words in -icism where -ic reflects -ic suffix.

Etymology: < suic- (in suicide n.2) + -ism suffix, probably as an alteration of suicide n.1, perhaps to avoid the homonymy with suicide n.2 (compare quot. 1772).
Now rare.
The act of taking one's own life; suicide.
