Origin: A borrowing from Latin. Etymons: Latin subtensa, subtendere.
Etymology: < post-classical Latin subtensa (1608 in the passage translated in quot. 1614 at main sense), use as noun (short for subtensa linea subtending line) of feminine past participle of classical Latin subtendere subtend v. Compare slightly earlier subtention n., and also earlier subtending adj.
Geometry.
A line subtended by an angle; an angle subtended by a line at a point.In quot. 1614: a chord of a circle (as notionally subtended by the centre of the circle). In quot. 1678: the hypotenuse of a right-angled triangle (as notionally subtended by the right angle).
