Forms: 1900s– suey pow, 1900s– sui pow.
Origin: Apparently a borrowing from Chinese.
Etymology: < Chinese (Cantonese) séuipóu sponge (1841 or earlier, obsolete in this sense) < séui water (corresponding to Mandarin shuǐ : see feng shui n.) and póu (noun, collective) frothy bubbles that can form in a liquid, e.g. when boiled, (verb) to submerge in a liquid.
U.S. slang. Now rare.
A sponge or rag used to clean and cool an opium pipe.

1926 Variety 29 Dec. 7/4 The dopes and hop heads, with their ‘stem’,..‘sui pow’, [etc.].
1954 D. W. Maurer & V. H. Vogel Narcotics & Narcotic Addiction i. 38 After each smoke, or whenever the pipe gets hot, the bowl is cooled and wiped off with a suey-pow, which is a damp pad about the size and shape of a small powder-puff.
