Etymology: < Middle French acetose, acetouse (mid 14th cent.; French †acéteuse ) and its etymon post-classical Latin acetosa sorrel (14th cent. in a British source), use as noun (short for herba acetosa (14th cent. in a British source)) of feminine of acetosus acetose adj. Compare Spanish †acetosa (1410), Italian acetosa (c1350). Compare scientific Latin Acetosa, given to the plant by Tournefort as generic name (a1708).
Obsolete.
Any of various kinds of sorrel (genus Rumex) formerly used as ingredients in medicinal preparations.
