Origin: Apparently a borrowing from French. Etymon: French bouder.
Etymology: Apparently < French bouder to pout, to sulk (a1370 in Middle French), probably of imitative origin. Compare slightly earlier bouderie n. Französisches etymol. Wörterbuch s.v. *bod- suggests that the French word goes back to the same base (of ultimately imitative origin) as boudin boudin n.: see discussion at pudding n. N.E.D. (1887) gives the pronunciation as (bū·di) /ˈbuːdɪ/.
Obsolete.
intransitive. To sulk or be sullen; to mope over something.Apparently only in the works of Anthony Trollope.
