Origin: A borrowing from Latin. Etymon: Latin suppōnere.
Etymology: < classical Latin suppōnere to place under or beneath, to append, subjoin, to put in the place of another, substitute, to introduce fraudulently, in post-classical Latin also to assume as a basis of argument, to have as a prerequisite, presuppose, to suppose, assume, to allege, claim (frequently from 13th cent. in British sources) < sub- sub- prefix + pōnere to put, place (see ponent n. and adj.1). Compare Occitan supponer , Spanish suponer (1st half of the 16th cent. or earlier), Portuguese supor (15th cent.), Italian supporre (probably 14th cent.). Compare suppose v.
Obsolete. Chiefly Scottish.
