Etymology: < classical Latin subsecīvus (also, more commonly, subsicīvus; in post-classical Latin also subcisivus (11th cent.), succisivus (4th cent.; compare succisive adj.) remaining, left over, spare < subsecāre to cut off or away (see subsect v.) + -īvus -ive suffix.With subsecive hours compare post-classical Latin horae subsecivae (1585 in a work title, or earlier), also classical Latin subsecīvum tempus (also subsecīva tempora, plural) spare time.
Obsolete.
Remaining over, spare. Chiefly in subsecive hours.
