单词 supercherie
释义

supercherien.

Brit. /suːˌpɛːʃəˈriː/, U.S. /suˌpɛrʃəˈri/
Forms: 1500s–1600s superchierie, 1600s supercharyes (plural), 1600s superchiery, 1600s– supercherie, 1600s– superchery.
Origin: Of multiple origins. Partly a borrowing from French. Partly a borrowing from Italian. Etymons: French supercherie; Italian soperchieria.
Etymology: < (i) Middle French, French supercherie attack made upon a person at a disadvantage (1566), affront (1575), trickery, deception (1611), and its etymon (ii) Italian †soperchieria (now soverchieria ) arrogant action, foul play (a1498 as †superchieria), trickery, deception (a1594) < †soperchiare to be arrogant, to act in a proud manner (now soverchiare ) < †superchio superfluous, excessive, proud, haughty (now soverchio ), ultimately < the reflex of an unattested post-classical Latin form *superculus (probably < classical Latin super over, above (see super- prefix) + -culus -culus suffix) + Italian -eria -ery suffix. N.E.D. (1917) lists the word as obsolete under the headword form superchery, giving the pronunciation as (siŭpə̄·ɹtʃəri) /s(j)ᵿˈpəːtʃəri/, and, as a variant, a non-naturalized pronunciation, (süpęrʃəri) /sypɛrʃəri/.
