Etymology: < classical Latin subrēpent-, subrēpēns, present participle of subrēpere to crawl, creep, ooze < sub- sub- prefix + rēpere to creep (see repent adj.²). With sense 2 compare use of post-classical Latin subrepens in botany, in e.g. radix subrepens subrepent root (1758 or earlier; compare quot. 1821 at sense 2).
