Origin: A borrowing from Latin. Etymons: Latin subrēpent-, subrēpēns, subrēpere.
Etymology: < classical Latin subrēpent-, subrēpēns, present participle of subrēpere to crawl, creep, ooze < sub- sub- prefix + rēpere to creep (see repent adj.2). With sense 2 compare use of post-classical Latin subrepens in botany, in e.g. radix subrepens subrepent root (1758 or earlier; compare quot. 1821 at sense 2).

2. Chiefly Botany. Of a plant or part of a plant, or (later also) a sessile animal: somewhat repent (repent adj.2 1a); esp. having a growth habit intermediate between prostrate and erect. Now rare.
