Origin: Probably formed within English, by derivation. Etymons: superannuate adj., -ion suffix1; superannuate v., -ion suffix1.
Etymology: Probably partly < superannuate adj. + -ion suffix1, and partly < superannuate v. + -ion suffix1: see -ation suffix. Compare post-classical Latin superannuatio (in legal context) expiry of a year's time limit (from 14th cent. in British sources).
1. The attainment of the specified age at which a person is required to leave school; exclusion from a school on these grounds. Now rare.In later use only at certain boys' public schools.
