Origin: A borrowing from Latin. Etymon: Latin superannatus.
Etymology: < post-classical Latin superannatus (of animals) more than a year old (from 12th cent. in British sources) < super annum beyond a year (4th or 5th cent. in Jerome; < classical Latin super (see super- prefix) + annum , accusative of annus year: see annals n.) + classical Latin -ātus -ate suffix2. Compare French suranné (late 12th cent. in Old French as sorané in sense ‘(of animals) more than a year old’, 1340 in sense ‘(of a contract or legal document) that becomes invalid one year after its original date’, 1567 in sense ‘old’, 1648 in sense ‘not young’), Italian †soprannato (1611 in Florio). Compare later superannate v. and superannuate adj., and slightly earlier superannated adj.
