Origin: A borrowing from Latin. Etymon: Latin summa summārum.
Etymology: < classical Latin summa summārum < summa sum n.1 + summārum , genitive plural of summa . With use as adverb compare slightly later summa adv.In use as adverb after similar use of post-classical Latin summa summarum (frequently from 1528 in the use of reformers from Germany and elsewhere). Quot. 1649 is from a text by a native speaker of German.
