1857 M. J. Berkeley Introd. Cryptogamic Bot. §489. 444 The leaves [of some Liverworts] are disposed after two different plans, according to which they have received the name succubous or incubous. In the former case they are disposed in a spiral which turns from left to right, and consequently the anterior border of each inferior leaf is covered by the posterior border of that immediately above. In the latter, the spiral turns from right to left, and the anterior border of each inferior leaf covers the posterior border of the leaf placed immediately above it.
1861 H. Macmillan Footnotes from Nature 49 [The leaves of the liverworts] are disposed either in a spiral which turns from left to right, in which case they are called succubous, or in a spiral which turns from right to left, when they receive the name of incubous leaves.
