Etymology: < subordination n.1 + -ism suffix, after German Subordinatianismus (1795 or earlier; < subordinatian- (in Subordinatianer , subordinatianisch : see subordinationist n. and adj.) + -ismus -ism suffix, after e.g. Novatianismus Novatianism n.). Compare subordinationist n.In β. forms directly < German Subordinatianismus.
Theology. Chiefly historical.
The doctrine that the second and third persons of the Trinity (the Son and the Holy Spirit) are inferior, in order or in essence, to the first (God the Father).
