Origin: Formed within English, by derivation; modelled on a Latin lexical item. Etymons: sub- prefix, ordain v.
Etymology: < sub- prefix + ordain v., partly after post-classical Latin subordinare subordinate v.2 Compare slightly earlier subordinate v.2 and the foreign-language verbs cited at that entry. In sense 4 after Italian subordinare (1644 (in the passage translated in quot. 1654) or earlier in this sense), specific use of subordinare subordinate v.2
