Origin: A borrowing from Latin. Etymons: Latin subodorat-, subodorari.
Etymology: < post-classical Latin subodorat-, past participial stem (see -ate suffix3) of subodorari to have an inkling, suspect (from a1508; 1526, a1588 in British sources) < classical Latin sub- sub- prefix + odōrārī to perfume (see odorant adj.). Compare French subodorer (1522 in Middle French; 1648 in specific sense ‘to doubt (something)’).
