The action of seeking a woman's hand in marriage; behaviour by a man intended to persuade a woman to marry him. Sometimes also more widely: the action of pursuing a relationship or sexual relations with another. Formerly also: the state or condition of being a petitioner or suppliant (see suitor n. 4a).
