Etymology: < Arabic çūfī lit. ‘man of wool’, < çūf wool (see Margoliouth Early Devel. Mohamm., 1914, 141). Compare French sofi , soufi . It has often been erroneously associated with Sophy n.1
One of a sect of Muslim ascetic mystics who in later times embraced pantheistic views.
