Origin: A borrowing from Latin. Etymons: Latin suffrāgia, suffrāgium.
Etymology: < classical Latin suffrāgia, plural of suffrāgium suffrage n.Compare Anglo-Norman suffragijs (plural) prayers, intercessions (end of the 13th cent.; rare). Use in the singular is first found later than use in the plural, and is comparatively rare; it is likely to have been inferred from the plural form within English.
Obsolete.

a. In plural with the. A series of relatively brief commemorations of saints, prayers for peace, etc., typically said at the end of one of the daily liturgical offices; = suffrage n. 1a. rare.
