Etymology: Partly (in sense 1) < post-classical Latin suffragialis (14th cent.) < classical Latin suffrāgium suffrage n. + -ālis -al suffix1; partly (in sense 2) < classical Latin suffrāgium + -al suffix1.
Obsolete rare.
1. Christian Church. Designating a letter issued by a religious house, order, guild, etc., entitling the person to whom it was granted to share in the spiritual benefits of the community's good works and prayers (cf. suffrage n. 2a).Cf. letters of fraternity at fraternity n. 4.
