Etymology: < submission n. + -ist suffix.
Chiefly depreciative. Now chiefly historical.
A person who advocates submission or compromise; spec. (U.S. History, in the period preceding the American Civil War) a person from the Southern states willing to relinquish sovereignty in order to remain in the Union. Also attributive or as adj.The spec. use of the term was used esp. by southern secessionists.
