Etymology: < late Latin succentor, agent-noun < succinĕre to sing to, accompany, ‘chime in’, agree, < suc- = sub- prefix 2d + canĕre to sing. In sense 3, as correlative to praecentor precentor n., associated with sub- prefix 2b (compare sub-chanter n.).

a. A chanter who takes up the chant after the precentor, or who presides over the left choir. (Also allusively.) Obsolete.
