Origin: A borrowing from Latin. Etymon: Latin sublingualis.
Etymology: < post-classical Latin sublingualis (1579 or earlier designating a pill placed under the tongue, 1618 or earlier designating a vein situated under the tongue) < classical Latin sub- sub- prefix + linguālis lingual adj., after Hellenistic Greek ὑπογλωττίς , used by Galen to denote a kind of lozenge (see hypoglottis n.). Compare French sublingual (1581 or earlier in Middle French).
