Origin: Probably a variant or alteration of another lexical item. Etymon: suffix n.
Etymology: Probably partly an alteration of suffix n. after sub- prefix, and partly < sub- prefix + -fix (in prefix n., suffix n.). Compare earlier subfix v. Compare also superfix n.
1. Chiefly Grammar. An element added to the end of a word to adjust or modify its meaning; a suffix. Now rare.

Origin: Either (i) a borrowing from Latin. Or (ii) formed within English, by derivation. Etymons: Latin subfix- , suffix- , subfīgere , suffīgere ; sub- prefix, fix v.
Etymology: Either < classical Latin subfix-, suffix-, past participial stem of subfīgere, suffīgere (see suffix n.), or < sub- prefix + fix v. Compare earlier suffix v. and later subfix n.
1. transitive. To fix on or attach below or to the end of something else; to append. Now rare.
