Etymology: Probably < stead n. (compare forms at that entry) + Old English -gian, -igian, suffix forming verbs from adjectives and nouns (compare -y suffix1).On the variation in stem vowel see discussion at stead n.
Obsolete.
intransitive. To come to a standstill, stop; to hesitate, delay. Cf. stead v. 7.Quot. OE has sometimes been alternatively interpreted as showing a transitive verb meaning ‘to bring to a standstill’.
