Origin: A borrowing from Latin, combined with an English element; modelled on a German lexical item. Etymons: Latin sūber , -ized suffix.
Etymology: < classical Latin sūber cork oak (see suber n.) + -ized suffix, after German verkorkt (1859 or earlier in sense ‘that has become similar to cork in structure or texture’; 18th cent. or earlier in sense ‘(of a bottle) sealed with a cork’). Compare slightly later suberize v.
Botany.
That has been converted into cork tissue; impregnated with suberin.
