Origin: A borrowing from Latin, combined with an English element; modelled on a German lexical item. Etymons: Latin sūber , -ize suffix.
Etymology: < classical Latin sūber cork oak (see suber n.) + -ize suffix, after German verkorken (1852 or earlier in sense ‘to become similar to cork in structure or texture’, frequently in past participle verkorkt ; 18th cent. or earlier in sense ‘to seal (a bottle) with a cork’). Compare earlier suberization n.
Botany.
transitive (chiefly in passive). To impregnate (the wall of a plant cell) with suberin. Also intransitive.
