Origin: Formed within English, by derivation. Etymons: sub- prefix, cellular adj.
Etymology: < sub- prefix + cellular adj. With sense 1 compare French sous-cellulaire (1825 or earlier).
1. Medicine. Designating subcutaneous, subserous, or submucosal connective tissue (cf. cellular adj. 1a); located or occurring in such tissue. Now rare or disused.
