Origin: A borrowing from Latin, combined with an English element. Etymons: sub- prefix, Latin cavāt-, cavāre.
Etymology: < sub- prefix + classical Latin cavāt-, past participial stem (see -ate suffix3) of cavāre to hollow (see cavation n.), after excavate v. Compare post-classical Latin subcavare to hollow out beneath (12th cent. in a British source).
Obsolete. rare.
transitive. To exist below or within rock; to dig or excavate from this position.
