Origin: Either (i) a borrowing from French. Or (ii) a borrowing from Latin. Etymons: French subaudition; Latin subaudition-, subauditio.
Etymology: < (i) French subaudition (1569 in Middle French), or its etymon (ii) post-classical Latin subaudition-, subauditio action of mentally supplying something that is not expressed (4th cent.) < classical Latin subaudīt- , past participial stem of subaudīre subaud v. + -iō -ion suffix1.
