subway alumnus n. U.S. slang (now chiefly historical) a supporter of a college football team who did not attend the college (usually in plural, also in extended use).Originally in reference to fans of Notre Dame, Indiana, who lived in New York City, where the team often played. [So called because they could travel to games by subway; compare Subway Series n.]
