Origin: A borrowing from Latin. Etymons: Latin subunion-, subunio.
Etymology: < post-classical Latin subunion-, subunio (1512 or earlier) < classical Latin sub- sub- prefix + ūniō union n.2, after Hellenistic Greek ὑϕέν (see hyphen n.).The Latin word is sometimes used in 17th-cent. sources to denote a hyphen; compare e.g.:1665 R. Johnson Scholars Guide 2 A Subunio (-) used 1. when two whole words are united, as pale-faced. 2. when one part of the word is writ at the end of one line, and the other at the beginning of the next.
Obsolete.
Partial or incomplete union, esp. the hyphenation of words.
