Origin: A borrowing from Latin. Etymon: Latin subulatus.
Etymology: < post-classical Latin subulatus (1511 or earlier in non-scientific use; 1736 or earlier in scientific use) < classical Latin sūbula awl ( < sūere sew v.1 + -bula , instrumental suffix) + -ātus -ate suffix2. Compare French subulé (1749). Compare subulato- comb. form.In subulate-lanceolate (see quot. 1870 at Compounds) after scientific Latin subulato-lanceolatus (see subulato- comb. form).
Chiefly Botany.
Slender and tapering to a point; awl-shaped.
