Origin: A borrowing from Latin. Etymons: Latin sublevātiōn-, sublevātiō.
Etymology: < classical Latin sublevātiōn-, sublevātiō fact of lightening or easing, in post-classical Latin also (of the soul or spirits) elevation (4th or 5th cent.), (in architecture) underpinning (14th cent. in a British source), action of lifting up (1542) < sublevāt- , past participial stem of sublevāre (see subleve v.) + -iō -ion suffix1. In sense 1b influenced semantically by elevation n. II. In sense 2 probably partly after Italian sollevazione (1503 in sense ‘uprising, revolt’; 14th cent. in general sense ‘elevation’); compare also earlier uprising n. 7.In β. forms probably after Italian sollevazione.
