Etymology: < classical Latin sublātiōn-, sublātiō raising of the spirits, elation, in post-classical Latin also raising of children, action of taking away, removal (4th cent.), suspended matter in urine (1533 or earlier) < sublātus (see sublate v.) + -iō -ion suffix1. Compare Middle French sublation action of quashing legal proceedings (1555).In sense 4 after sublate v. 2. In sense 5 after German Aufhebung Aufhebung n.; compare slightly later sublate v. 3.
1. Medicine. The middle region of the supernatant of a sample of urine standing in a vessel; a visible suspension within this region; a particle within such a suspension. Obsolete.
