subjunctive vowel n. [after post-classical Latin vocalis subiunctiva (5th or 6th cent. in Priscian), Hellenistic Greek ϕωνῆεν ὑποτακτικόν] (a) the second vowel of a diphthong; (b) the vowel by which the subjunctive is distinguished from the indicative.
