Etymology: < sub- prefix + distinguish v. Compare post-classical Latin subdistinguere to punctuate, separate by a comma (2nd or 3rd cent., after Byzantine Greek ὑποστίζειν ), to separate, distinguish (4th cent.), and also Spanish subdistinguir , Italian suddistinguere (both 18th cent.). Compare subdistinction n.
transitive. To distinguish (a thing or group of things) further, esp. to subdivide into further categories; to subclassify. Also occasionally intransitive.
